Sunday Morning Post (V.3, #1): Trumpenstein

Many political types are speaking as if the patient is still alive, barely breathing, and fearing that the end is near.  Someone should stop the charade, step forward and make the inevitable conclusion: The Republican Party is dead.

There!  I said it!

The party did not so much as commit mass suicide as fall victim at the hands of its monstrous creation: Trumpenstein.  This monster has profoundly destroyed any semblance of unity we had in this country, which to be honest was a bit of an ideological fantasy anyway.  This monster is demanding complete and total loyalty as well as previous dictators (Stalin and Mussolini come to mind) had in their time.

This week the villagers will gather en masse in Washington not to destroy the monster, but to try to save it.  Local authorities will not permit their carrying of pitch forks and blazing torches, but that will not matter to them.  They will come and seek to do random acts of vandalism and violence if they do not get their way. They will do this knowing their grievances with the system will get covered on the six o’clock news.

Poor, deluded fools.

If everything goes well all of their efforts to de-legitimize the 2020 election will be for naught.  There may be some delays in the finalizing of the Constitutional protocols for counting the electoral votes, but, in the end, Joe Biden will be declared the 46th President of the United States.  Whether or not downtown Washington escapes unscathed…well, that’s another matter altogether.

Regardless of the short-term conclusions there will still be the ashes of the old GOP which will need to be dealt with.  I’ve concluded that the Democratic Party does not offer a one-size-fits-all ideology to satisfy all of the American citizens.  This is why the existence of the Republican Party with its now discarded world view of states rights was necessary.  There was and still is room in our democracy for the big tent of contrasting political and sociological ideals.

The old tent has collapsed, and some are desperately trying to prop it back up.  Mitt Romney has proven to be the adult in the room, but very few politically influential voices are rising in agreement.  A few have gone as far to suggest that a new party loyal to the old GOP ways is needed.  How this will be accomplished is anyone’s guess.

There will have to be some sort of organizational meeting to determine how they will go about creating this new political entity.  Then there will be the question of who gets control of the cashbox at the RNC.  That should prove to be quite the tussle!  The new party may need to abandon any claims to the funding in the RNC war chest and solicit start me up style funding from wealthy donors.   The surviving Koch brother might be a good start as it has been reported that he has become disenchanted with the direction of the Trump Republicans.

At this point I can’t say what will happen in the next four years, but it might prove to be a very profitable time to be a lawyer.  There is bound to be a winter blizzard of lawsuits engulfing this nation for the foreseeable future.

In any event this country needs a few more adults in the room to look beyond all this and get us back to the day-to day monotony of American democracy.  It wasn’t always this exciting, and it wasn’t always pretty, but it’s worked for us over the last 240 some years.

I hope we rid ourselves of Trumpenstein soon. I also hope that we will not see a sequel in 2024.

(Thank you for reading.  Film at eleven...)

If the Republican party splits into two parties, it is good news for the Democrats. The right-wing vote could be split for years.

Unless we win the Senate... I can't still help but think Biden will just be a figure head of a President. The Senate will see to it they fail everything he wants to do. Come on Georgia........move your bloomin arse........

After today's phone call, saying the Republican Party is dead is... well, a bit of an understatement.

True, Debra. As a historian I am reminded of what happened in 1912 when Teddy Roosevelt broke away and formed the Bull Moose Party because he was disappointed with Taft. Needless to say it ended badly for them.

I know, Maddie, I know. McConnell has already promised to be an obstructionist again.

That would be nice, Bob, but I doubt that they will turn on him.

Actually, Dave R., I thought that my declaration was stating something that's been obvious for a while.

Courage, Spo, courage!
