Sunday Morning Post (V.3, #12) - Getting Back To Where We Should Be

We are two months into the new administration and we can already see what a difference an election can make. For one thing it has been very quiet in the media. We are not hearing statements about conspiracies and or paranoia made in the middle of the night or very early in the morning by a very paranoid individual who never met a conspiracy he didn’t like.

Yes, I’m talking of course about Thing #45.  I rarely mentioned his name in this blog during his tortuous term in office.  The cheapskate couldn’t pay me enough to print his name here.  I see no reason to show respect for his horrifying legacy by publishing his name now.

So, yes, we have quiet.  No peace, but plenty of quiet.

Up until a few years ago, our country prided itself as always standing up for democracy and abhorring the concept of dictatorships.  In the last few years, well, what can I say?  We all but showed a national disdain for majority rule and did all put sleep with the most notorious dictatorships since Hitler.   Okay, so we back-slided and coasted willy-nilly dangerously close to fascism.

I’m sure those nations who allied with us for decades are still a little wary of greeting us with open arms so soon.  Who can blame them?  We need to prove ourselves worthy of their company as leaders in the fight against tyranny.  We need to show that we are headed in the right direction.

President Biden has had a busy few months, undoing most of the last guy’s numerous executive orders, articulating a largely progressive vision for the country, and playing zero rounds of golf.  Seriously, no rounds at all.  How will this nation survive as a great sovereignty if we don’t have a leader who ignores our problems to chase a small, dimpled sphere around sublimely manicured acreage?

Of course, there are some in this country who still pine for the direction the nation was going under A’hole #45. So, we’re back to square one in the eternal struggle of both sides convincing the other that they have the better ideas to improve everyone’s lives.  Good luck, one and all!

Then there are still others who will never be convinced that the American way is the right way.  Yes, I’m looking at you, Vladimir!  Sorry you got your fee-fees hurt when our (current) President had the gall to agree with the assessment that you are a killer.  Face it, Vladimir, the United States needs a boogeyman.  We need to have a villain in our lives.  Hitler is dead and you are just perfect to fill this position.

We’re approaching the state of the world late 2016 when we had progressed somewhat culturally over the previous eight years and our relations with Russia’s Putin was frosty.  It’s not ideal, but it feels good just the same.

(Thank you for reading.  Ah, there’s nothing like nostalgia for better and fair times!)

I guess we'll just have to become used to the idea that some folks like Thing #45.
I'm glad he's gone and the adults are in charge again.

I know I couldn't be happier, but I still think we're going to have a back and forth with thems. And with so many Democrats getting ready to retire....that could get bloody. We have a hell of a lot of work to do.

But years from now when I'm old, it will be fun regaling tales to the youth of presidents from my lifetime. And then they will question me. "Well, gee Miss Maddie, who was president from 2017-2021?"

"Oh didn't I tell you kids? We went several years without one.... we had a amateur golfer filling in."

Sadly, the Repugs have doubled down on their efforts to restrict our voting rights. So, no, I don't things are all the much better. I find it very worrisome. Which is why I am through giving the Repugs the benefit of the doubt. They don't do the right thing... they don't even know what that is. They are thieves and liars. Ugh.

Biden is a nice change of pace... but the pace needs to pick up big time. We are only guaranteed four years. We can't set anything down... like minimum wage, for instance. Even if Kamala ends up ALWAYS carrying it over the finish line... we need big change in this country... or the Repugs are simply going to cheat until they take back control and ruin it forever.

I still wake up every morning and say a silent prayer of gratitude to the flying spaghetti monster for 46.

From my British perspective, the ongoing moves to restrict voting rights, in effect to REDUCE the numbers voting, fill me with horror, and I really do fear that many of the most influential among the Dems are not especially bothered about it happening, or are too afraid of upsetting Repub voters by taking action to prevent it. From my distance it looks like what's needed is a leader of considerable grit and tenacity to do what's necessary and, sad to say, I seriously doubt if #46 has what it takes to be achieve what needs to be done.
But why should I go lecturing other countries on what THEY should do while we have our very own #45 wannabee, Bojo, daily harking back to the highly dubious 'glory days' of the British Empire when we could take on the entire world [though now substitute 'Europe'] and, in his opinion, 'win'. Ye gods!!!

Yes, it is very nice that he's gone, Debra.

I wish we could reach his supporters somehow Bob.

I have toyed with the idea of writing an entry explaining the last few years to a future historian, Mistress. Stayed tuned....

Hi Upton. I agree we need to go faster given the 4 year deadline, but given the opposition in Congress this may be as good as it gets.

Thank you Sassybear. Prayers can be helpful.

Hi Raybeard. I realize that Biden is low energy which many of his critics are attributing to dementia or worse. I am also deeply troubled by the voter suppression movements rippling through many of our state governments.
